Green Juice Recipe (Dog Friendly!)

7/23/2012

It's a new week, friends, and I couldn't think of a better way to freshen things up. At the Dickerson residence we love to juice, and we often share a bit of this goodness with Coco Bean. Quite often it leaves her with a flavor-of-the-week colored beard or even funnier, mustache. I have received lots of
tweets, comments, and messages on the pictures of her colorful fur, and many wanted some recipes shared. Happy to! I have been wanting to post some juicing recipes for a while now, and this seems like the perfect time. Today's juice is a green juice adapted from Joe Cross's film, Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead.
An amazing documentary that everyone should see.

Juicing is a great way to quickly fuel up with nutrients, re-energize, and detox many of the not so great things we come into contact with on a daily basis. This recipe is full of superfoods which are not only healthy for you, but for your dog as well! "What, juicing for dogs?!", you say? Well, maybe not a big ol' glass of juice, but sharing a portion with them is very beneficial. Have you ever really stopped and read the ingredients in your dogs food? Whether or not it is made with healthy ingredients, the foods are cooked at such high temperatures it kills the nutrients anyway, and then they are left with, well... stuff. This is a great way for both of you to add those nutrients back in.

*The Recipe:
Serves 2.5 (the half being for Fluffy)
6 Kale Leaves
4 Celery Stalks
2 Small Granny Smith Apples
1 Cucumber
Optional - 1 Teeny Tiny piece of ginger, I prefer it without, but this batch was for my husband and he loves him some spicy ginger. If you do decide to use ginger, brake off a small piece, and then make it even smaller. A little goes a long way. I would do half of the size shown in the picture.

*I recommend eating organic foods, but this is totally up to you! I do think it is important to understand that eating organic isn't a fancy-pants trend or fad in any way whatsoever, but rather a lifestyle choice to better ones health. It is an important step towards a healthier and toxin-free you, which is always a wonderful thing!

Remember to wash your fruit and veggies before juicing. After running everything through the juicer, add ice to two glasses (if desired) and pour, saving a mini portion for Fluffy. I use a small ramekin dish for Coco's serving. Be sure that they drink theirs in a designated area since after all it is green. And when your done laughing, wipe their super chic green mustache/beard with a wet cloth. Unless of course you do want little green polka dots on your pretty area rug!

Here are a couple of 'after' photos from my Instagram (@chicsprinkles). She ended up looking more like a Green Bean than a Coco Bean. Warning: you and your dog will feel a healthy burst of energy for the day (without a crash) and will be über productive. Enjoy, and stay tuned for more whole food recipes!

“Some people have believed that food does not affect them. Picture now the fact that eating is about taking an object that is foreign to one's body, and putting that inside oneself. Food is not just a factor that affects us, it is the primary thing that affects us.If what we put inside our bodies does not affect us, what could?”

    1. Thanks, Sarah! Me too - Eating for Beauty is a book by David Wolfe (he's the guy with the super curly hair that shows up in a lot of food docs like Food Matters). He also has a documentary of his own called Simply Raw which is on my list to watch :) Be sure to let me know how they like it, and post pictures! xx

    2. David Wolfe is great! I go in phases of eating a low fat raw vegan diet and I always feel better than when I'm on my normal vegan diet. I don't think I've seen Simply Raw either so I'll have to check that out too! Oh, and I'll def post pics! :)

    1. Thanks, Beth! So funny, right?? I though it would be easier for Coco to sometimes drink a mixture of veggies since she doesn't always like all of them! She loves carrots and apples, but I think she would look at me like I was crazy if a gave her a leaf of kale! ;)

  3. What is your sweetest introductory juice? That might be a good way for non-vegetable people like me to get some nutrients! Good idea!

    1. Awesome, question my non-veggie friend! This recipe is actually sweet since it has the apples in it, but if you want to ease your way in try carrots + apples! If you do four large carrots and one large green apple it should be a decent amount of juice for you (or you can share!) Carrots are naturally sweet on their own, and the green apples have a lower glycemic index, so it is a good balance. That is coco's top favorite, so you should be safe! ;)

    1. Oh yes absolutely - apples are a fantastic healthy food option for dogs. They provide nutrients like fiber and vitamin c. I like to use green apples since they have a lower glycemic index. I'm sure your pup will love the juice! xo

  8. I juice for my post pancreatic dog. I do remove pulp because his system can't handle digesting too much fibre. I use 1-2 type of fruit with vegs. Fruits are mainly pear, apple, blueberries, papaya, pineapple, watermelon on rotation and veg such as spinach, arugula, kale, cucumber, one grape tomato, carrot, tiny bit of asparagus. I prefer to use small portions and more variety for him. I buy organic when i can. His energy is good.
